Instagram Checkout

Shoppable Instagram ads from in-app.

Introduction.

We asked Campaign Success Manager, Adam Culley, to explain the new in-app checkout feature by Instagram, and so he did.

So, the news was released in the last couple of days for the latest update to Instagram and instant shopping experience. In theory, this will revolutionise the way shoppers can purchase within social media accounts without the need to leave the Instagram platform.

How it works.

When you tap to view a product from a brand’s shopping post, you’ll see a “Checkout on Instagram” button on the product page. Tap it to select from various options such as size or colour, then you’ll proceed to payment without leaving Instagram. You’ll only need to enter your name, email, billing information and shipping address the first time you check out.

Once your first order is complete, your information will be securely saved for convenience the next time you shop. You’ll also receive notifications about shipment and delivery inside Instagram, so you can keep track of your purchase.  It’ll then give you the option to use a PIN when you wish to purchase further items within your Instagram account.

Roll-out is on the way.

The current roll-out is in the US with selected partners including Nike, Burberry and internet-native brands such as Kylie cosmetics.  There are a number of steps to go through before your company would be ready to adopt this within your business, but Crunch is on hand with all the pre-cursor requirements to ensure your business is ready for the UK roll-out. Primarily but not exclusively, your company must comply with the merchant and commercial policies and have your business profile connected to a Facebook catalogue.

Purchase in-app for higher conversions.

In terms of how this will affect business, early indications show that users are twice as likely to purchase something in-app rather than being directed through to another site and then purchasing.  As the platform learns and grows it can identify products and markets that the user has already expressed an interest in and therefore provides a far more cost-effective way of reaching your target audience.  As with any social media platform, Instagram has the potential to reach new audiences and, therefore, potential new customers.

There are reports circulating that Instagram are taking a % of the sales, but this is yet to be confirmed.  Reports suggest that Instagram have included this to enable them to refund the full purchase prices and shipping costs should there be an issue with the order or the Merchant involved.

After trawling several articles and Instagram press releases, we now have a direct link on where you can apply to become one of the first users when this rolls out.

With over 1 billion Instagram users viewing their feed each month, now is the time to speak with us at Crunch Simply Digital to advise and prepare your Instagram/Facebook accounts ready for this major shake-up within the online shopping experience.
